Parents believe that their children's playtime in their early years can help them build social skills (48%) and teach them original thinking (45%) – with 28% believing that play can have a huge impact on their youngster's future career path, according to a study.

Mums and dads try to spend an average of 30 minutes a day playing with their offspring – with 27% using this time to actively try to shape their child's future profession.

The poll of 1,000 parents, with children aged 2-8-years-old, revealed some of the top careers they believe can be inspired by play – with science coming out on top.

This was followed by engineering and teaching, while working in design or becoming a musician rounded out the top five.

The survey also revealed some of the preferred methods of play for youngsters – with half inspired by technology-based toys, while four in ten are most imaginative when playing with arts and crafts.

Meanwhile 42% of kids have the most fun creating and building, one in three prefer to read – and 27% of parents consider construction-related play a core driver in influencing their child's future.

However they choose to play, 46% of parents said the role of playtime in children's development cannot be ignored, with 47% saying it helps build their creativity.
