An Italian medical student recently went from refereeing to deliver CPR during her first ever game officiating a Serie D contest.

Cristiana Laraspata, who is a second year medical student at the University of Bari specialising in anaesthesia and resuscitation, had to sprint over to the sidelines late on during Vastogirardi and Avezzano's recent Serie D tie to give CPR to an ill fan.

Just before a free-kick was taken, players began to signal towards the sideline, which prompted Laraspata to rush over to the fan.

Clearing the way, the medical student performed CPR on the ill elderly man whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Both fans on the sideline and players on the pitch were all in a visible state of shock, with a host of those on the pitch throwing their arms over their heads in despair at the unfolding situation.

With her medical background, Laraspata instantly sprung into action, switching from referring to trying to save a life.

"I didn't think about it for a moment. I immediately stopped the match, going to help the elderly man," Laraspata told Corriere del Mezzogiorno.

"They were endless moments. For a moment the gentleman even seemed to have recovered. I did everything to save him."

Once the ambulance arrived to take the fan to the hospital, the game continued, with Vastogirardi going on to win the game 1-0. Sadly though, once he was inside the ambulance, the fan suffered another heart attack, resulting in his unfortunate death.

And while the outcome on the day was overall a sad one, Laraspata's quick action earned her praise from Nicola Favia, the president of Puglia's Regional Referees Committee.

"Cristiana represented a positive example, an always valid message: life before each game," said Favia in a statement.

"We must say that she was cold and waiting for official help she was the first to rush from the field to the grandstand to operate the first intervention. She was on her debut in Serie D."
