An airplane was grounded by one of its flight attendants after someone spilled some rice in the aisle, according to a delayed passenger.

Jennifer Schaper claimed that the attendant held up the Southwest Airlines aircraft on April 15, and wouldn't let the journey get underway until someone cleared up the mess.

According to Schaper, the crew member walked up and down the aisles, refusing to leave the gate, until the offender came clean.

Dubbing the incident '#RiceGate', Jennifer took to Twitter to relay the bizarre events unfolding in front of her on the Atlanta to Houston plane.

Updating her followers about the live aircraft action, Ms Schaper typed in a follow-up tweet: “Update: they are still refusing to leave until the rice has been cleaned. They are sending out for a broom. #RiceGate.”

She also attached a video, in which the flight attendant can be heard apologising for the delay and saying that as “I don’t think you wanna walk through it”, the mess needs to be taken care of before the flight is able to leave.

Shortly afterwards she provided another update that the rice was now being cleaned up off the floor but that the flight attendant was 'MAD' and let everyone know 'we were not raised right and she is disappointed in all of us'.

Jennifer added she thought that the person who spilled the rice ought to have cleaned it up, but said staff were 'out of line in how they handled the situation' by delaying the flight.

To make matters worse, the delayed flight had to wait even longer to take off because another passenger took advantage of '#RiceGate' to pop off to the loo, meaning the plane still couldn't take off.

A Southwest Airlines spokesperson said: "This appears to be a normal departure, and we do not have any flight irregularity reports or specifics surrounding the passenger claims.

"It’s not unusual for a flight attendant to request a broom from our airport staff to allow Crew to tidy the plane prior to departure, when needed."
