Snooker shot of the championship contest ‘over’ after Mark Selby’s stunning escape

The contest for shot of the World Snooker Championships appears to already be over after Mark Selby wowed Matt Selt with an incredible escape.

Selby produced his own version of the great escape when Selt snookered his rival. However, the Jester from Leicester knocked the white off three cushions, narrowly avoiding the pink, to hit the red.

And the shot even left Selt in shock, and he declared: “That’s the shot of the championship over!” While Eurosport commentator Neal Foulds added: "That’s a brilliant shot to go round the back of the pink and hit that red, it really is.

"It was a brilliant shot, a great escape. There might be better pots but as far as escapes go it was right up there."

The escape helped Selby win the frame, taking the game to 9-6, as he honed in on a place in the second round. Selt battled back to 9-8, but Selby dug deep, winning the clash 10-8.

Selby told BBC Sport: "I felt like my concentration was non-existent. I was coasting at one stage, but you switch off for one minute and this game comes back to bite you.

"When you get under the gun here you can always buckle. At 9-8, I wasn't enjoying it, so I was glad my game managed to hold up under the pressure. I felt the only time I switched on was in that last frame.

"I was pleased with the way I held myself together."
