Even Mark Selby looks shocked as ball drops into Crucible’s ‘bargain bucket’ pockets

Mark Selby looked stunned when the ball dropped into the Crucible's 'bargain bucket' pockets.

Selby look bemused after he pocketed the red ball during his snooker World Championship clash against John Higgins. And fans were just as perplexed as the 39-year-old by the ball's meandering path into the huge pocket on social media.

Supporters blamed the tables at this year's tournament for the "American nine-ball pool-esque" pockets that are "ruining" the sport. While others labelled the size of the pockets as "embarrassing".

One fan fumed: "It's like watching nine-ball. What's happening?" A second user concurred: "Nine-ball pockets – embarrassing."

And a third person scoffed: "Every table is like this these days it's pathetic." Followed by a fourth fan who raged: "Is it just me or do the pockets seem a bit bigger this year? No way that should be dropping."

While another user went as far as to compare the pocket sizes to potholes on the road, adding: "It's a pothole!"

However, the bargain bucket-sized holes weren't able to step Selby cruising into the semi-final with a 13-7 victory over Higgins. The four-time champion will now face Mark Allen in the last four.

A beaming Selby was happy with his performance against Higgins and is relishing taking on "tough opponent" Allen next. He said after the match: "From start to finish I felt I played as good as I can. My safety was as good as it can be, it needed to be. When I got my chances I scored more times than not. It’s a tough combination.

"Mark (Allen) has been the form player this year. He is number one on the money list for a reason. He won three tournaments, lost in the final of another and now here he is in the semi-finals of the World Championship.

"It doesn’t get any easier and will be a tough game. Mark will fancy the job but I’m going to look forward to it."
