Scottish league finishes East Fife fourth, Forfar fifth and fans can’t get enough of it

Football fans can't get enough of the incredible finish to the Scottish League Two table as East Fife pipped Forfar to fourth spot.

Facing each other on the final day of the season, Forfar ran out 1-0 victors at Station Park thanks to Matthew Aitken's 87th-minute strike, tapping in at the front post to round off a well-worked team goal.

The result means Forfar secured a fifth-place finish at the end of their second term back in Scottish League Two, having fallen short in the playoffs last time around, with East Fife now scheduled to play League One Clyde over two legs for a spot in the play-off final.

Wise-crack football fans were quick to realise the permutations surrounding the final-day fixture, which ended with the fantastic phonetic line East Fife fourth, Forfar fifth. "I have wanted to say this for years! East Fife fourth, Forfar fifth," joked one supporter.

"In The Scottish 4th Division its happened!! East Fife 4th, Forfar 5th. Tongue twister," commented another. "In Fife? It finally happened m8. East Fife 4 Forfar 5," quipped a third.

"We’ve waited a long time for a season like this. East Fife fourth Forfar fifth," posted a fourth.

An invention of the late, great Eric Morecambe, the scoreline was his concept of the ultimate tongue twister for a broadcaster reading out the classified results on a Saturday evening. And although the match did finish Forfar 5-4 East Fife, during the 1963/64 season, that came long before James Alexander Gordon began voicing the final scores around the British Isles.

In more recent times, fans were treated to a 5-4 penalty shootout to conclude a 2018 Scottish League Cup tie but sadly Gordon, who passed away in 2014, was not around to read the classified results.

"Eric never called me James," Gordon once recalled. "Whenever I saw him over a 20-year period, he would say 'East Fife 4 Forfar 5'. I've got a tape of that."
