F1 fans think Fernando Alonso was watching the Miami Grand Prix on the big screens – despite driving at speeds of up to 200mph.

Alonso recorded a very impressive third placed finish and was right in the mix from the very beginning. The Spaniard started the race very brightly, sliding into the top three and defending his position very effectively.

However, there were times when his focus seemingly began to drift, despite the fact he was hurtling down the Miami International Autodrome at speeds of around 200mph. And after seeing this, the motorsport world seem to think he may have been trying to watch the race on the screen.

“No way is Fernando Alonso watching the race on the screens whilst driving in P3,” one fan wrote on social media. “Just a normal Sunday drive for him to be fair, bros just chilling,” laughed another.

A third commented, “got to do something to stave off boredom,” before a fourth wrote, “bro is on a calm Sunday drive.” Incredibly, the experienced Spaniard has previously admitted that he does sometimes try and watch some of the action on the big screens.

During Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s fierce rivalry in 2021, the motorsport world and millions of fans in sport as a whole, regularly tuned in to watch the F1 titans go to battle. And one fan who got to watch some of the best moments of the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix was the two-time world champion.

“On the fight, no the team didn’t tell me anything, but I knew more or less what the situation of the race was,” he said when asked about the race. “I was looking at the big screens.

“I knew Esteban and Vettel were fighting, they were two corners in front of us and with 20 laps to the end and with Lewis coming two or three seconds faster, that was enough to win the race probably. So I knew that every lap I could hold him behind that was gold for Esteban’s win.”

If he was watching the big screens, he would have seen Verstappen become the first driver since Niki Lauda to win a race from ninth position, the Dutchman's fellow Red Bull ace Sergio Perez finished in second place, despite leading the race for large periods.
