F1 fans fear ‘awkward’ talks for Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff after radio message

F1 fans think Lewis Hamilton's contract talks with Toto Wolff could be "awkward" after he was told to stop complaining in the Austrian GP.

Hamilton struggled to keep his Mercedes under control throughout the race and was the first of seven drivers to receive time penalties for exceeding track limits.

He wasn't at all happy and asked engineer Peter Bonnington on lap 39: “Anyone got penalties yet?” Wolff then came on the team radio and replied: “Lewis, they’re all going to get penalties in front of you. All of them, so keep going.”

The FIA were struggling to keep up with the track limit violations, of which there were 1,200 potential incidents reported to the stewards, which further infuriated the seven-time world champion.

He once again asked on lap 52: "Is there a reason why the stewards haven't given those penalties yet?" Wolff wasn't as polite on that occasion as he snapped back: "Lewis, the car is bad, we know – please drive it."

Responding on Twitter, one fan argued: "Lewis and Toto still have to sit to negotiate and sign a new contract, now that will be an awkward room after today."

A second echoed: "Tense exchange between Hamilton and Toto…. does this bode well for contract extension?" A third claimed: "Toto finally realizing Lewis is a big baby."

Others felt they were making a mountain out of a mole hill, with one sarcastically posting: "Breaking news – boss tells employee to do his job."

Another said: "People are making this message out to be something bigger and worse than it is." And one wrote: "They are not kids for god's sake. It will be just as normal since they are long time FRIENDS."

Hamilton finished P7 but was given a retrospective 10-second time penalty after a major post-race review by the stewards of all the track limit violations they didn't resolve, which dropped him below team-mate George Russell.
