Alan Shearer has recalled his toughest-ever Premier League opponent, who left him with a broken nose and stitches.

The Newcastle and Blackburn legend relished physical battles with opposing centre-backs during his illustrious career, which saw him become the Premier League’s record goalscorer.

However, there was one opponent who always gave him a rough time, and it was a former England team-mate and Arsenal defender Tony Adams. The pair were embroiled in numerous scraps in the 90s and early 2000s, with blood often being spilt.

Shearer recalled going up against Adams during news The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards. Asked who their tough opponents were, Shearer said: “Tony Adams for me. I hated playing against him, I thought he was horrible.

"Broken nose, stitches in my eye, my lip, everywhere. I had some great battles with him but Tony Adams was the hardest.”

Lineker picked out former Italy and Sampdoria defender Pietro Vierchowod, branding him “evil”.

The Match of the Day presented said: “Tony Adams and people like that, you can normally hear them coming so you can get ready, but this fella was rapid. Small, rapid, but evil.
