Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman ‘in line for damehood’ if England win Women’s World Cup

Sarina Wiegman will reportedly be put forward for a damehood should England lift the Women’s World Cup.

Wiegman led the Lionesses to Euro success in 2022, and her England side will play in their second major final in as many years after a 3-1 victory over hosts Australia set up a final against Spain on Sunday.

And, pending victory, the Lionesses boss, who was previously made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau after leading the Netherlands to Euro 2017 triumph, isn’t the only one expected to be in line for an honour with several players also said to be put forward for recognition.

According to The Telegraph, Downing Street would increase the allocation of available sporting honours to recognise footballing success parallel to England’s 1966 triumph.

And with a more generous approach, captain Millie Bright, goalkeeper Mary Earps and Lauren Hemp, amongst other regular starters would be certain to receive an honour. Although there still remains uncertainty regarding whether fringe players could be up for awards such as MBEs.

After Euro success last summer, only four prominent players were recognised by the sporting honours committee with Leah Williamson receiving an OBE whilst Beth Mead, Lucy Bonze and Ellen White all became MBEs.

World Cup success for the Lionesses would see them make football history for the nation by winning back-to-back tournaments.

England’s victorious ’66 team saw manager Alf Ramsey knighted by the Queen, but captain Bobby Moore only received an OBE in 1967 – the only member of the playing squad to be honoured immediately.
