While a whole city housed under one roof might sound like the plot to a 1990s sci-fi movie, for the people of Whittier, it’s a reality they live every day.

With more than half the world currently living in cities, high rise apartment blocks are nothing out of the ordinary.

But this Alaskan city has just upped the ante.

In an enclave 58 miles southeast of Anchorage, you’ll find Whittier nestled between the glaciers and snowy mountaintops.

Just 273 people live in what has been dubbed 'America's weirdest city', and while they might not be too fond of that moniker, there’s no escaping its uniqueness.

But its reliance on just a few passageways means that if disaster strikes, the city gets stuck.

On July 5, 2023, a boat caught fire destroying the city's only vessel fuelling dock, halting ships coming and going, while also shutting the tunnel down as a precaution.

Whittier was originally developed by the US Army and was used as a military harbour and logistics base during World War II.

The behemoth Begich Towers building was built over a decade later to serve as the headquarters of the US Army Corps of Engineers during the Cold War.
